Age Group Descriptions

U3

Our U3 program is a fun and engaging introduction to soccer designed especially for our youngest players. Children will be divided into two small groups to ensure lots of involvement and movement. Parents are required to be on the field participating alongside their child, creating a positive and supportive experience. A program facilitator will guide families through a variety of age-appropriate activities that focus on basic movement, coordination, and fun with the ball. This program is all about smiles, connection, and building an early love for the game.

U4 to U7

Our U4, U5, U6, and U7 mini-soccer program blends game play with skill development to keep players active, engaged, and learning. Each session includes a team warm-up followed by small-sided games where for short periods of time players rotate between the field of play, a dedicated Development Zone, and the sideline for a short breather and water break. One WRSA/BYSA staff member manages the game and time on the field, while another leads fun, structured skill activities in the Development Zone to keep players moving and building confidence with the ball. Each team requires a parent volunteer who helps with general team management and supports smooth transitions between the game, development activities, and the sideline. This format maximizes touches, development, and fun every time these young players step on the field.

Grassroots (U8 to U10)

Our Grassroots program (U8–U10) focuses on high-quality training, player development, and creating a fun, inclusive environment for all players. Athletes attend soccer twice per week in structured two-week blocks. During development weeks, players rotate through four small-group training stations designed to maximize touches on the ball, movement, decision-making, and overall enjoyment. On alternate weeks, players continue with one development session and then participate in a game night where teams scrimmage in a supportive setting without formal referees, allowing them to apply the skills they’ve been learning. WRSA/BYSA staff lead each station, and parent volunteers play an important supporting role by assisting with activities and helping manage substitutions on game nights. The emphasis at this stage is development, confidence, teamwork, and fostering a lasting love for the game. (see MSA for more details: https://manitobasoccer.ca/content/grassroots)

U12 to U17

Our Community Soccer program (U12, U14, and U17) provides a balanced and engaging experience for players looking to continue developing their skills while enjoying team-based competition. Teams have soccer twice per week, with one dedicated practice night focused on skill development and team tactics, and one game night where players compete against other teams. Players who register are placed on teams, and each team is led by a parent volunteer coach who is responsible for planning and running practices, as well as managing the team during games. Depending on the number of out-of-town teams in each age group, some travel may be required on game nights. This program emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, skill growth, and creating a positive and competitive environment for players to continue their soccer journey.
